How to Add Cutlines to Your Design

1 min read

Adding cutlines to your artwork is a crucial step to ensure your stickers or labels are cut to your exact specifications. Cutlines define the path where the cutting will occur, aligning your design with the desired shape and size. Follow this guide to set up cutlines effectively for your artwork.

Step 1: Create a Separate Layer for Cutlines #

Start by creating a new layer in your design software, such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, and name it “Cutline.” Place this layer above your artwork layer. Keeping the cutline on its own layer ensures it wonโ€™t accidentally print with your design and makes it easy for the production team to spot and use during the cutting process.

Step 2: Use 100% Magenta for Cutlines #

Set the stroke color of your cutline to 100% Magenta, the standard for indicating cutlines. Adjust the stroke weight to 0.5pt, which is visible but not overpowering. This clarity ensures the cutting path is accurate and distinguishable from your design elements.

Step 3: Round Sharp Corners #

If your design includes sharp corners, round them to at least 0.04 inches (1/25 inch). This adjustment helps prevent potential issues during cutting, such as tears or jagged edges, and ensures a smooth final result.

Step 4: Submit a Layered File #

Once your cutlines are in place, save your file in a layered format such as PDF, AI, or PSD. Ensure the cutline layer is separate from your artwork layer. If your design uses a standard shape (like a square or circle), you can hide the cutline layer before submitting. Keeping your file organized helps the production team process your order efficiently and accurately.

Step 5: Add Notes in the Special Instructions Box #

Use the Special Instructions box on the product page to share any additional details about your cutlines. For example, you can include notes such as:

  • โ€œPlease keep as close to the supplied cutline as possible.โ€
  • โ€œRound all corners to a 1/8 inch radius.โ€
  • โ€œSoften any sharp corners on the dieline.โ€

Providing these details ensures your preferences are clearly communicated and implemented.

When to Include Cutlines #

You donโ€™t have to include cutlines, as the Art Team can create them for you. However, itโ€™s recommended to add cutlines in certain situations:

  • Custom Shapes: If you want a unique shape, like a cat silhouette or other non-standard forms, providing a cutline ensures the final product matches your vision.
  • Tapered or Curved Labels: For labels that wrap around containers or have specific shapes, adding your own cutlines ensures a precise fit.
  • Specific Corner Preferences: If you have a specific radius for corners, include it in your cutline or mention it in the Special Instructions box.

Need Assistance? #

If youโ€™re unsure about setting up cutlines or have specific requirements, the Art Team can assist. Simply upload your artwork, and theyโ€™ll create cutlines that align with your specifications. By following these steps and providing clear instructions, you can ensure your stickers or labels are produced exactly as you envisioned.
